Dracula citrina: The Vibrant Yellow “Monkey Face” Orchid

Dracula citrina is a truly unique and fascinating orchid species, known for its bright lemon-yellow flowers and its peculiar shape, which to many resembles a little “monkey face.” It’s an intriguing and rewarding addition to the collection of any orchid enthusiast who appreciates exotic species and more specific growing conditions.

Key Characteristics:

  • Lemon-Yellow Flowers with “Monkey Face”: The main attraction of Dracula citrina lies in its citrine-yellow to pale greenish-yellow flowers, around 2.5 cm in diameter. The pubescent sepals (covered with fine hairs), along with the small petals and central column, create a distinct appearance reminiscent of a simian face. The flowers appear on pendulous inflorescences that can reach up to 40 cm in length.
  • Growth Habit: This is an epiphytic orchid, meaning it grows on trees in its natural habitat, using them only for support. It can also be found growing lithophytically (on rocks).
  • Origin: Native to the cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador, thriving in cool, moist environments.
  • Thin, Keeled Leaves: It features thin, leathery, and often keeled leaves that emerge from short, upright stems. The plants do not form pseudobulbs.

Cultivating Dracula citrina:

  • Light: Prefers indirect, diffused light—partial shade. In its natural habitat, it grows beneath the tree canopy. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn its delicate leaves.
  • Temperature: This is a cool to intermediate-growing orchid. Ideal daytime temperatures range from 18°C to 24°C, with a significant drop at night, ideally between 10°C and 15°C. This temperature variation is crucial for blooming.
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity, between 70% and 100%, to thrive. In its native environment, it absorbs moisture directly from the air. For indoor growing, use a humidifier, humidity trays with water and expanded clay (making sure the pot doesn’t touch the water), or cultivate it in closed terrariums to maintain optimal humidity.
  • Watering: The substrate should be kept constantly moist but never soggy. Water daily or every other day, depending on substrate dryness, and ensure full drainage. Since the inflorescences emerge from the plant base, it’s commonly grown in basket-style pots or mounted to allow flowers to hang freely.
  • Substrate: Use a medium that ensures excellent drainage and aeration, such as high-quality sphagnum moss, fine-grade pine bark, perlite, or a mix of these. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
  • Fertilization: Fertilize moderately with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to ¼ strength every 1–2 weeks during the active growing season. Reduce or suspend feeding during colder months or periods of slow growth.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years, or when the substrate begins to break down, preferably when the plant starts producing new roots.

Additional Care:

  • Air Circulation: Good air circulation is extremely important for Dracula citrina to prevent fungal and bacterial issues, especially under high humidity.
  • Airflow in Terrariums: If grown in a terrarium, ensure proper airflow using small fans.
  • Observation: Regularly inspect the plant for pests such as mealybugs or mites, and treat them promptly if found.

With proper care and the right environment, Dracula citrina will amaze you with its exotic flowers and unique charm, becoming a striking and captivating centerpiece in your orchid collection.

Thinking of adding this rare gem to your collection? Dracula citrina is definitely an orchid that turns heads!
