Description

Brassavola nodosa: The Fragrant Lady of the Night

Brassavola nodosa, also known as the “Lady of the Night,” is a small and resilient orchid species native to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America. It is famous for its white, fragrant flowers that bloom primarily at night.

Characteristics of Brassavola nodosa:

  • Size: It is considered a small orchid, typically growing between 15 and 30 cm (6 to 12 inches) in height.
  • Flowers:
    • Color: The flowers of Brassavola nodosa are predominantly white, with possible hints of light green.
    • Shape: They have a unique and elegant shape, with long, narrow petals that resemble delicate ribbons.
    • Fragrance: The main attraction is the intense and pleasant fragrance, emitting a citrusy aroma similar to gardenia, which becomes more evident at dusk.
    • Flowering: It typically blooms twice a year but can bloom more frequently under ideal care.
  • Growth Habit: It is an epiphytic orchid, meaning it grows attached to other plants, using them solely for support without extracting nutrients from them.

Care for Brassavola nodosa:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight for long periods, as it can burn the leaves. Watering: Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged.
  • Temperature: Thrives in mild to warm temperatures, ranging from 18°C to 29°C (65°F to 85°F).
  • Irrigation: Keep the substrate moist, but not waterlogged. Water when the roots appear whitish and allow excess water to drain completely. Immersion watering, where you soak the pot in water for 10-15 minutes, can be an effective method.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, around 60-80%. Using a humidifier might be necessary in dry environments.
  • Substrate: Use a well-draining and aerated substrate, such as pine bark, charcoal, and sphagnum moss.
  • Fertilization: During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize monthly with orchid-specific fertilizer diluted in water. Suspend fertilization in fall and winter.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the substrate decomposes or the pot becomes overcrowded.

Tips for Success:

  • Ensure good air circulation around the plant.
  • Occasionally wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris.
  • Be vigilant for pests and diseases and treat them promptly.

Brassavola nodosa is a relatively easy orchid to cultivate and perfect for beginner collectors. With its fragrant flowers and natural elegance, this night-blooming orchid will undoubtedly add a touch of charm and fragrance to your environment.
