Description
Encyclia vitellina, also known as the “Sunrise Orchid”, is a native plant of Mexico, Nicaragua, and Honduras. This stunning epiphytic orchid (which grows on other plants without parasitizing them) is known for its vibrant flowers, which can range from orange to scarlet red, and for its relative ease of care.
Characteristics:
- Flowers: The main attraction of Encyclia vitellina is its showy and long-lasting flowers. They bloom in spring, summer, and occasionally in autumn, opening sequentially on an inflorescence up to 45 cm long.
- Size: It is a medium-sized orchid, growing up to 30 cm in height, with conical pseudobulbs and elongated leaves.
- Habitat: Naturally found in oak forests, pine trees, and shrubs, at altitudes ranging from 1400 to 2600 meters.
Care:
- Light: Prefers filtered sunlight or bright indirect light. Avoid excessive direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
- Temperature: Ideally between 15°C and 25°C.
- Irrigation: Keep the substrate moist, but not waterlogged. Water when the roots appear silvery, allowing partial drying between waterings.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50-70%).
- Substrate: Well-draining substrate is essential, such as orchid bark, sphagnum moss, or charcoal.
- Fertilization: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer during the growing season, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Cultivation tips:
- Provide a good support for the plant, such as a tree trunk or a special orchid basket.
- Replant every 2-3 years, when the substrate decomposes or the plant outgrows the pot.
- Avoid sudden temperature changes and cold drafts.
Encyclia vitellina is a stunning addition to any orchid collection. With its relatively simple care and vibrant flowering, this plant will certainly bring a touch of tropical beauty to your home.
