Paphiopedilum Pinocchio: The Enchanting Orchid with a Pinocchio Face

Discover the Paphiopedilum Pinocchio, a stunning slipper orchid famous for its flowers that resemble the shape of the Pinocchio character’s head! Treasured by collectors and enthusiasts of exotic plants, this rare gem combines beauty, delicacy, and a playful touch.

Origin and Characteristics:

  • Native to Southeast Asia, resulting from the crossing of Paphiopedilum glaucophyllum and Paphiopedilum primulinum.
  • Medium-sized, averaging 50 to 100 cm in height, including the floral stem.
  • Unique medium-sized flowers, with green and pink fused petals resembling Pinocchio’s hat and a white ventral pouch (slipper).
  • Dark green, elongated foliage, complementing the plant’s elegance.

Care for a Happy Paphiopedilum Pinocchio:

  • Light: Bright diffused light. Avoid excessive direct sunlight, but provide filtered sunlight throughout the day.
  • Temperature: Warm temperatures during the day (between 20°C and 28°C) and mild at night (between 15°C and 18°C).
  • Humidity: High humidity (between 70% and 80%) is crucial. Use humidifiers, vaporization trays, or group plants to increase humidity.
  • Watering: Water moderately when the substrate is almost dry. Allow the top of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering.
  • Fertilization: Use a specific orchid fertilizer diluted every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

Tips for Collectors:

  • Paphiopedilum Pinocchio is recommended for intermediate orchid growers due to its specific humidity needs.
  • A pot with good drainage and specific orchid substrate are essential (pine bark, charcoal, or commercial mix).
  • Rotate the pot regularly to ensure all sides receive sufficient light.
  • After flowering, cut the floral stem just above the last node with the possibility of sprouting to encourage new blooms.
