Plants for collectors
Our selection is also designed for those looking to build or grow a collection of different and uncommon orchids.
Rare orchids for collectors
An orchid collection does not have to start with dozens of plants. It can start with a single species that sparks your curiosity.
It might be a botanical Cattleya, a Phalaenopsis with unusual genetics, a Bulbophyllum, a Vanda, a fragrant species or simply a plant you have never found in a regular shop.
What matters is finding a plant that is special to you. Explore our available rare orchids and discover species that can transform your collection.
Frequently asked questions about rare orchids
1. Growing conditions
Make sure you can give the plant the right light, temperature, humidity and ventilation.
2. Plant size
A young plant may need more time to reach maturity and flower.
3. Substrate and roots
Check the type of substrate and the condition of the roots. Different genera may need quite different growing methods.
4. Origin and identification
For collector plants, correct identification of the species or hybrid is particularly important.
5. Availability
Some rare species only appear occasionally. If you find a plant you are looking for, it may not be available again right away.
Where can I buy rare orchids in Portugal?
You can find rare and collector orchids at Tropical Orchids Portugal. Availability depends on stock and the species available at the time.
Does Tropical Orchids Portugal sell botanical orchids?
Yes. Our selection includes botanical species and hybrids of interest to collectors, subject to availability.
Are rare orchids harder to grow?
Not always. How hard they are to grow depends mainly on the needs of the species. Some uncommon orchids can be fairly easy to grow, while others need more specific conditions.
Can I buy rare orchids online?
Yes. Tropical Orchids Portugal sells orchids online, subject to stock availability.
Do you ship orchids to other countries?
Tropical Orchids Portugal ships to several European destinations, subject to the conditions and rules that apply to transporting plants.
Do the photos show exactly the plant I will receive?
Not always. Since orchids and tropical plants do not stay in bloom all year round, many of the photos on the site are a reference for the species’ flowering. If you would like to see the actual condition of the specimen you will receive (size, foliage, or whether it has a spike/buds), contact us by phone, WhatsApp or email. We will be happy to send you up-to-date photos of the available plant before you buy.
Rare orchids vs. commercial orchids
Commercial orchids are usually selected for large-scale production, easy transport and uniform flowering.
Rare and collector orchids are sought after for different reasons: genetics, origin, species, fragrance, flower shape, rarity or simply because certain plants are hard to find. It is precisely this diversity that makes collecting orchids so fascinating.
