Frequently asked questions
Here are the most common questions about orders, shipping, plant care and visiting our greenhouse.
Orders and payment
Which payment methods do you accept?
We accept credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard), PayPal, Multibanco, MB WAY, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Payments are processed securely by authorised providers (Stripe, PayPal and easypay). We do not have access to your full card details and do not store them.
Do I need an account to buy?
No. You can check out as a guest. With an account, you can track orders, save addresses and favourites, and earn points in the Rewards club.
Can I get an invoice with my tax number?
Yes. Enter your tax number at checkout and the invoice is issued with it and sent by email. Once issued, Portuguese law does not allow the invoice to be changed to another tax number, so please check your details before paying.
Can I cancel my order after paying?
Yes, as long as it has not been dispatched. Contact us as soon as possible at info@tropicalorchidsportugal.com or on WhatsApp: we will cancel it and refund the full amount.
Can I request a special order or a gift?
In some cases, yes: larger quantities, gift sets or a plant that is not in the shop. Talk to us and we will see what is possible.
Do prices include VAT?
Yes. All prices are in euros and include VAT at the applicable rate. Shipping is added at checkout, before you pay.
Is it safe to buy on the site?
Yes. The site uses an encrypted connection (HTTPS) and payments are made directly in the secure environments of Stripe, PayPal and easypay. Your data is handled according to our Privacy policy.
Can I send a plant as a gift?
Yes. At checkout, enter a delivery address different from your billing address. If you would like us to include a message, write it in the order notes.
How do I use a discount coupon?
Enter the code in the basket or at checkout. Unless stated otherwise, one coupon can be used per order. Points from the Rewards club can also be used as a discount.
Shipping and delivery
Where do you ship to?
To all of mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores, and to 25 European countries, including Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands. The full list and costs are on the Shipping page. If your country is not listed, talk to us.
How much does shipping cost?
In mainland Portugal, €8.50 up to 10 kg. For other destinations, the cost depends on the address, weight and volume of the order and is calculated automatically in the basket and at checkout, always before you pay. See the reference prices on Shipping.
How long does delivery take?
Paid orders are prepared on the next working day. Once dispatched, delivery takes 24 to 48 hours in mainland Portugal and mainland Spain, 2 to 3 working days to France, and 3 to 5 working days to the islands and the rest of Europe.
On which days do you ship live plants?
Monday to Thursday, so plants are not left in a warehouse over the weekend. An order paid on Thursday afternoon or at the weekend goes out on Monday. In very hot or cold weather, we may delay shipping for a few days to protect the plants and will let you know by email.
How do I track my order?
When your order leaves our greenhouse, you receive an email with the MRW tracking number so you can follow the delivery at any time.
How are the plants packed?
We pack every plant by hand with dedicated protection for the journey: the pot and substrate are held in place, leaves and spikes are protected, and the box is chosen to fit. The aim is for the plant to arrive just as it left the greenhouse.
What if I am not home on delivery day?
Follow the delivery with the MRW tracking number to arrange it with the carrier. If possible, give an address where someone is always present, such as your workplace: plants should not stay in the box for many days. If the order comes back because no one was home or the address was wrong, the cost of re-shipping is paid by the customer.
Do you ship outside the European Union?
We ship to Norway and the Canary Islands. Customs duties, import taxes and plant-health requirements may apply to these destinations and are not included in shipping. Please contact us before ordering.
Returns and guarantee
What if the plant arrives damaged?
Send us your order number and photos of the plant and packaging, preferably within 48 hours. We will offer a replacement, a refund or another solution of your choice, at no cost to you. Usually you do not need to send the plant back. Details are in the Returns policy.
Can I return a plant if I change my mind?
Live plants deteriorate quickly, so the law excludes them from the right of withdrawal. They cannot be returned if you change your mind, but they remain fully covered by the guarantee if they arrive damaged or are not what you ordered.
What about pots, substrates and accessories?
You have 14 days from delivery to withdraw from the purchase without giving a reason. We refund the amount paid, including standard shipping, within 14 days. Return costs are yours. See how in the Returns policy.
Do plants arrive in flower?
It depends on the product. When a plant is sold in flower or in bud, the description says so. Unless stated otherwise, photos show the species or hybrid; colour, size and flowering time vary naturally from plant to plant.
How long does a refund take?
No more than 14 days from when you tell us your decision, using the same payment method as the purchase. For Multibanco or MB WAY payments, we ask for your IBAN to make a bank transfer.
Growing and support
Can you help me grow my orchids?
Yes. We have growing guides, and our team answers questions about watering, light, substrate, feeding and flowering, before and after you buy. Send us photos of your plant: they help us give better advice.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open the box as soon as it arrives and take the plant out carefully. Place it somewhere bright, out of direct sun for the first few days, away from draughts and heat sources. Check that the substrate is dry before watering. If you have questions about your plant, talk to us.
What are your customer support hours?
Monday to Friday, 9 am to 7 pm (Lisbon time), by phone (+351 919 938 376), WhatsApp (+351 914 635 875) or email (info@tropicalorchidsportugal.com). Outside these hours, leave a message and we will reply as soon as possible.
How often should I water an orchid?
For a Phalaenopsis in bark, usually once a week in spring and summer and a little less in winter. Let the substrate dry slightly between waterings, use room-temperature water (ideally rainwater) and let it drain well: the plant should never sit in water or have water left in the centre of the leaves. If in doubt, wait another day.
Where should I put my orchid?
Somewhere bright without strong direct sun, such as an east-facing window or behind a sheer curtain. Olive-green leaves mean the light is right; very dark leaves need more light and reddish leaves mean too much. Keep it away from radiators, heaters and draughts.
What do I do when the flowers fall?
On a Phalaenopsis, you can cut the spike above the second node below the flowers to encourage a new side spike, or cut it back to the leaves so the plant builds strength and flowers next year. If the spike dries out, cut it at the base. Keep watering and feeding as usual.
Why won’t my orchid flower again?
Most often it needs more light. Give it a brighter spot and, for a healthy plant, a drop of about 5 °C at night for a few weeks helps trigger flowering. Each genus has its own cycle: see our growing guides or talk to us.
Why do buds fall before opening?
Usually because of sudden temperature changes, draughts or moving the plant while the buds are forming. Keep it in a stable spot, away from heat and cold sources.
When should I repot my orchid?
Every one to three years, or when the substrate breaks down or the plant outgrows the pot. Do it when the roots are active (green tips), with bark-based orchid substrate and a clear pot with holes. Never use ordinary potting soil. We have suitable pots and substrates.
Which fertiliser should I use?
A specific orchid fertiliser, in weak, regular doses during the growing season, following the label. Once a month, water with plain water to flush out built-up salts. In winter, feed less or stop. See our fertilisers.
Are orchids toxic to cats and dogs?
Phalaenopsis is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to dogs and cats. Other plants may not be, and substrates and fertilisers should not be eaten. As a precaution, keep plants, substrates and fertilisers out of reach of pets and children.
