About this plant

🕷️ Brassia verrucosa: The Fascinating Spider Orchid with Spectacular Flowering ✨

A Brassia verrucosa, commonly known as the "Spider Orchid" due to the unique shape of its flowers, is an epiphytic species native to the humid forests of Central and South America, with a strong presence in mountainous regions of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. This orchid stands out for its arching flower spikes laden with extremely long, slender and elegant sepals and petals, which resemble the legs of a spider.

The flowers of Brassia verrucosa display vibrant colouring ranging from lime green to yellowish green, contrasting with a white or creamy lip speckled with small dark, velvety bumps resembling "warts" (the origin of its specific epithet verrucosa). Besides its exotic visual appeal, the Brassia verrucosa emits a pleasant, spicy and slightly sweet fragrance during the day, making it a striking centrepiece in any botanical collection.

✨ Key Highlights of the Brassia verrucosa

  • Unique Floral Architecture: Exotically shaped flowers with elongated sepals that can reach more than 15 to 20 cm in length, creating a dramatic visual impact.
  • Exotic and Intense Fragrance: Releases a characteristic, spicy perfume during the brightest hours of the day, filling the surrounding area.
  • Abundant Flowering: Produces long flower spikes with multiple flowers arranged in two parallel rows, remaining beautiful and fresh for several weeks.
  • Excellent Vigour and Adaptability: A very resilient species with fast growth, developing robust oval pseudobulbs and dense green foliage.

🌱 Practical Growing Guide and Care for the Brassia verrucosa

To keep your Brassia verrucosa healthy, with well-nourished pseudobulbs and spectacular flowering every year, follow these essential growing recommendations.

1. Light and Sun Exposure

The Brassia verrucosa prefers medium to high light to thrive and encourage abundant flowering. Grow the plant in a very bright spot, but shielded from direct sunlight during the hottest hours. Ideally, use filtered shade (around 50% to 60% shading) or place it near well-lit windows facing east or west. Firm, bright light-green leaves are a sign that the light levels are perfectly balanced.

2. Temperature and Air Circulation

This species adapts very well to an intermediate climate, tolerating temperature fluctuations with great ease. The ideal daytime range is between 20°C and 26°C, while at night the temperature can gently drop to 14°C to 17°C. This temperature difference between day and night is beneficial for stimulating the emergence of flower spikes. Provide good ventilation and continuous air circulation around the plant to prevent excess moisture from building up in the leaf axils.

3. Watering and Ambient Humidity

During the active growth phase (spring and summer), the Brassia verrucosa requires regular, generous watering. The substrate should remain slightly moist but never waterlogged. Let the top layer of the substrate dry out slightly between waterings before watering again. Once the new pseudobulbs have completed their development and during winter, reduce the watering frequency, allowing the substrate to dry out a little more between applications. Maintain ambient humidity between 60% and 75%.

4. Substrate and Ideal Pot

Due to the structure of its roots and the speed of pseudobulb growth, the Brassia verrucosa needs a growing medium with excellent drainage and aeration. It is ideally grown in plastic pots with drainage holes or wooden baskets. An excellent substrate option is a mix of medium-grain pine bark combined with coconut fibre or charcoal to keep the structure airy and clean around the root system.

🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Feeding

As a fast-growing and vigorous orchid, the Brassia verrucosa responds extremely well to a regular feeding plan throughout its growing cycle.

During the spring and summer months, when the plant develops new shoots and roots, apply Orchid Focus Grow fertiliser weekly or fortnightly at a diluted dose. This feed encourages leaf expansion and the formation of strong pseudobulbs.

As the pseudobulbs mature and the flower spike season approaches, switch to Orchid Focus Bloom. This phosphorus- and potassium-enriched formula encourages the formation of sturdy flower spikes and vividly coloured flowers.
