About this plant

🌸 Laeliocattleya Eximia: Historic Elegance and Exceptional Vigour ✨

The Laeliocattleya Eximia is a historic primary hybrid, highly prized in the world of orchid growing, resulting from the hybridisation of Cattleya labiata and Cattleya purpurata (formerly Laelia purpurata). This genetic union combines the floral grandeur and perfect form of Cattleya labiata with the resilience, velvety texture and spectacular lip of Cattleya purpurata.

The result is the magnificent Laeliocattleya Eximia, a robust orchid that produces large flowers, with petals and sepals in vibrant shades of pinkish lilac and a deep magenta lip with bold markings and yellow tones in the throat. Thanks to its noble genetic heritage and striking fragrance, the Laeliocattleya Eximia is a key piece for any collection of exotic orchids.

✨ Key Highlights of the Laeliocattleya Eximia

  • Impressive and Colourful Flowers: The Laeliocattleya Eximia produces large-diameter blooms with intense colours and a velvety lip of high ornamental value.
  • Striking Fragrance: It has a sweet, enveloping scent that gently perfumes the surroundings while the buds are opening.
  • Vigorous Growth and Robustness: It shows excellent growth speed, developing strong pseudobulbs with a great capacity for new growth.
  • Classic Lineage of Prestige: A historic primary hybrid much sought after by collectors for the stability and beauty of its flowering.

🌱 Practical Growing and Care Guide for the Laeliocattleya Eximia

To ensure your Laeliocattleya Eximia grows vigorously, keeps its pseudobulbs firm and flowers abundantly in its proper season, follow this guide with our best growing recommendations.

1. Light and Sun Exposure

As a hybrid descended from species with high light requirements, the Laeliocattleya Eximia needs generous sun exposure to trigger the formation of the flower spike. Grow the plant in bright light but filtered through 50% to 60% shade netting, or near east- or south-facing windows with sheer curtains. Avoid direct exposure to strong midday sun so the leaves do not scorch. Leaves with a soft lettuce-green tone indicate the ideal light level.

2. Temperature and Air Circulation

The Laeliocattleya Eximia adapts perfectly to an intermediate to warm climate. Recommended daytime temperatures are between 20°C and 28°C, while night-time temperatures should range between 14°C and 18°C. A gentle drop in temperature at night is essential to encourage flower buds to develop. Air circulation should be constant and well ventilated to prevent moisture building up on the leaves and to avoid fungal problems.

3. Watering and Humidity Management

Because it has thick pseudobulbs and fleshy roots designed to store water, the substrate of the Laeliocattleya Eximia should dry out almost completely between waterings. During the period of active root and new shoot growth, water generously and let all excess water drain away. In winter, reduce watering to match the plant's rest period. Keep the relative air humidity between 55% and 75%.

4. Substrate and Repotting

The substrate for the Laeliocattleya Eximia must provide excellent aeration and very fast drainage. We recommend growing it in perforated plastic pots or clay pots, using a mix made mainly of medium-grade pine bark. Repotting should only be carried out when the substrate has broken down or the plant is growing out of its pot, preferably when new roots appear at the base of the new shoot.

🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Feeding

A regular feeding plan is essential to support the development of new pseudobulbs and to ensure full, vigorous flower spikes on your Laeliocattleya Eximia.

During the growth and active development phase, apply Orchid Focus Grow fertiliser weekly or every 15 days at a diluted dosage. This formula supplies the nitrogen and essential micronutrients needed for root establishment and tissue strengthening.

Once the pseudobulbs have finished forming and the flower spike begins to mature, switch to Orchid Focus Bloom. The high phosphorus and potassium content of this fertiliser encourages sturdy flower buds and intensifies the colours and fragrance of the Laeliocattleya Eximia.
